The Ecogeography of Andean Potatoes

چکیده

Adaptation to varied habitats confers ecological versatility and the capacity for coarse-grained distribution across heterogeneous habitats, whereas ecological specialization implies a restricted pattern. Ecogeography and adaptive trairs help to determine whether farmers are able to adjust their diverse erops to socioeeonomie and environmental changes (a process known as in situ conservation) or whether they are led to abandon them. Abandonment adds to the likelihood of loeal extinctions (genetie erosion). Versatiliry and specialization, and the corresponding ecogeography traits, thus require different strategies for the conservation of agricultural biodiversity, which is a primary goal of sustainable development. The diversity and farming of Andean poratoes offer a useful ex-

Explaining Andean Potato Weevils in Relation to Local and Landscape Features: A Facilitated Ecoinformatics Approach

BACKGROUND Pest impact on an agricultural field is jointly influenced by local and landscape features. Rarely, however, are these features studied together. The present study applies a "facilitated ecoinformatics" approach to jointly screen many local and landscape features of suspected importance to Andean potato weevils (Premnotrypes spp.), the most serious pests of potatoes in the high Andes...

Freeze-dried but Always Peeled: Anthropological Approaches to Food Processing, Preparation, and Consumption of the Andean Potato

The " white " potato (Solanum tuberosum) is an indigenous crop to the Andes and grows both at elevations above 10,000 feet and at lower elevations. The potato is the world's fourth largest food crop (CIP 2002; Messer 2000). Since its domestication 8,000 years ago on the Andean altiplano (high plateau), potatoes—raw, boiled, roasted or freeze-dried—have had central roles in indigenous Andean cul...

Ecogeography of ploidy variation in cultivated potato (Solanum sect. Petota).

UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY The taxonomy of cultivated potatoes has been highly controversial, with estimates of species numbers ranging from 3 to 17. Ploidy level has been one of the most important taxonomic characters to recognize cultivated potato species, containing diploid (2n = 2x = 24), triploid (2n = 3x = 36), tetraploid (2n = 4x = 48), and pentaploid (2n = 5x = 60) cultivars. We...

Worldwide distribution of potato-cyst nematodes and their importance in crop production.

The potato-cyst nematodes Heterodera rostochiensis and H. pallida are important pathogens of potatoes, a basic food crop. When soil populations of either species are high, potato yields are often less than the seed planted. Apparently, these nematodes originated in the Andean mountains of South America, the home of the potato. One or both species have spread from this region to approximately 47...
